Sport in England

In 2004, Sport England (who distribute Lottery money to English Sport) designated golf as one of the top 10 sports in the country and asked English Golf Union (EGU),English Women Golf Association (EWGA) and Professional Golfers Association (PGA) to produce a ‘Whole Sport for Golf’ which covered all elements of the game, amateur, professional, men, women and juniors. Sport England awarded golf £9 million for the period 2005 - 2009. This is administered by The England Golf Partnership whose members are EGU, EWGA, and PGA supported by the Golf Foundation (GF) and Sport England.

The plan itself consists of three main sections: -

'Start’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Succeed’.

The first two of these sections covers getting people into the game and then retaining them.

Succeed’,

as its title implies, deals with the elite end of the game at county and national levels.

The implementation of the ‘Whole Sport Plan’ is managed at National level and delivered through Counties and Clubs. Several English Counties have already set up their Partnerships and have Development Plans produced and submitted to EGU / EWGA for funding. The Middlesex County Golf Partnership (MCGP) was officially formed on the 14th June 2007 and is working closely with EGU / EWGA Regional Development Officer, Steven Peet and Katie Cooper of the Golf Foundation.
